Shmaryahu Noah Schneersohn

Russian rabbi (1842–1923)

Shmaryahu Noah Schneersohn was a Russian rabbi who played a significant role in the Chabad dynasty of Hasidism. Born in 1842, he went on to become the fourth and last rebbe of Kopust, a branch of the Chabad movement. The details of his succession are not universally agreed upon, with some sources indicating that he followed his brother Shalom Dovber Schneersohn, while others suggest that he succeeded his brother Shlomo Zalman Schneersohn in 1900.

As the rebbe of the Kopuster movement, Shmaryahu Noah Schneersohn was based in the town of Babruysk, where he served as the rabbi of the chasidim from 1872. During his tenure, he founded a yeshiva in Babruysk in 1901, contributing to the educational and spiritual development of the community. He was also a prolific author, penning a notable two-volume work on Hasidism titled "Shemen LaMaor". Shmaryahu Noah Schneersohn passed away in 1923, leaving behind a legacy as a respected leader and scholar within the Chabad dynasty.
