Cohen's leadership abilities were recognized through his appointments as Mayor of Adelaide on three separate occasions: from 1889 to 1890, 1901 to 1904, and 1909 to 1911. He later held the position of Lord Mayor from 1921 to 1923. His contributions to public life were formally acknowledged in 1924, when he was knighted for his services.
