Elia del Medigo
Sephardic philosopher (c. 1458–c. 1493)
Elia del Medigo was a Sephardic philosopher who lived from approximately 1458 to 1493. He was known by various names, including Elijah Delmedigo, Elias ben Moise del Medigo, Helias Hebreus Cretensis, and Elijah Mi-Qandia. Del Medigo's philosophical views were shaped by his studies of prominent thinkers, and his contemporaries perceived him as being influenced by different intellectual traditions.
Del Medigo's philosophical leanings have been subject to interpretation by scholars. While some consider him a follower of Maimonides, others argue that he was a strong adherent of Averroes's doctrines, including the more radical concepts of unity of intellect, eternity of the world, and the autonomy of reason from revealed religion. This divergence in interpretation reflects the complexity of Del Medigo's thought and his engagement with various intellectual currents of his time.
