Bernard Kops was a renowned British literary figure, born in 1926 to Dutch-Jewish immigrant parents in the East End of London. His upbringing in Stepney Green would later influence his writing, which spanned multiple genres. Kops' personal life was marked by a long-standing marriage to Erica Eve Gordon, whom he wed in 1956, and with whom he had four children. This stable foundation allowed him to focus on his craft, resulting in a prolific body of work.

Throughout his career, Kops demonstrated his versatility as a writer, penning numerous plays for various mediums, including television, stage, and radio. His literary output also included nine novels, seven poetry volumes, and two autobiographies. The significance of his contributions to British literature was formally recognized in 2009, when Queen Elizabeth II awarded him a Civil List pension.
