Isaac Uziel

Moroccan physician, poet and grammarian

Isaac Uziel was a multifaceted figure from Morocco, excelling as a physician, poet, and grammarian. Born in Fez, Morocco, he demonstrated a wide range of intellectual and professional pursuits. His expertise in linguistics is particularly notable, given his contributions to the field. Uziel's career took him to various locations, including Oran, Algeria, where he served as a rabbi for a period.

Uziel eventually settled in Amsterdam, where he established a Talmudical school that attracted prominent pupils, including Manasseh ben Israel and Isaac Aboab da Fonseca. His concern for the religious practices of the Sephardic community led him to deliver a series of lectures, which ultimately resulted in the formation of the "Neveh Shalom" congregation. Following the death of Judah Vega in 1610, Uziel was appointed as the rabbi of this new congregation, further solidifying his role as a respected figure in the community.
