Discourse to the Greeks concerning Hades
Short Christian treatise
The Discourse to the Greeks concerning Hades is a short Christian treatise that has been the subject of debate regarding its authorship. Historically, it was attributed to the Jewish historian Josephus, a designation that has been in place since at least the 9th century. This attribution was further solidified when William Whiston included it in his translation of Josephus' works.
However, scholarly consensus now suggests that the treatise is more likely the work of Hippolytus of Rome. Despite the erroneous attribution, the Discourse to the Greeks concerning Hades has been widely disseminated, often appearing in English editions of Josephus' work without notation of the potential misattribution. As a result, it remains an important, albeit misunderstood, component of historical and theological studies, with its true origins tracing back to the contributions of Hippolytus of Rome.
